Scarlet's Bakery

Overview

In 2014, the idea of a bakery was brought to life. Rachelle Starr, the Founder and Executive Director of Scarlet Hope, always had the idea of utilizing baking and catering, one of her own passions, as a vehicle to cultivating leadership, customer service, and kitchen skills for women who are active in seeking life change through providing employment opportunities to women leaving situations of exploitation and trafficking. After months of renovations, the vision became a reality in December 2015, the transformation from what was formerly a pharmacy, to a beautiful bakery was completed. For the next 4+ years, Scarlet’s Bakery became known as a classic bake shop offering Derby City’s sweetest treats. It also expanded into two other locations in that time and specialized in catering services for special events, cafes, and restaurants throughout the greater Louisville area. In the spring of 2020, with the COVID19 pandemic, Scarlet’s Bakery took a hit like many other small businesses in America. They worked to maintain their customers and employees but ultimately made the decision that in order to save the business model, they needed to pivot to online orders only and pre-packaged mixes.

Why Scarlet’s Bakery?

As an impact-minded enterprise, they desired to create employment for women that experienced extreme barriers to traditional employment and that needed a safe place to grow and mature. The goal of the bakery was to create top-level baked goods while training women and providing them confidence in something beyond their past experiences.

How We Helped

We began by initially endorsing them for their first Kiva loan of $10,000 for the equipment they needed. We then extended an additional loan to aid with concept development, tenant improvements, and operational support – a loan that has subsequently been repaid. Beyond our financial capital, we made significant investments of time by providing creative arts and business development support. We also own the initial Shelby Park building at 739 Oak and were able to offer a 5-year lease at a subsidized rate in order to support their operations.
